Improving the energy efficiency of computational processes

68% improvement in the energy consumption of our processes

Zaragoza, December 20, 2022 – Nologin/NOW Systems has carried out updating, revision and optimization works, both of the systems and processes and of the code in charge of the oceanographic forecasts, obtaining an estimated total saving of 68% of the consumption, going from 15.84kwh to 4,98kwh.

Savings have been achieved by upgrading systems from FTII to FTIII, making better use of infrastructure nodes, and performing code optimizations.

Taking into account that the daily electricity consumption per household is 9.5kwh, Nologin is freeing up every day more than the daily electrity consumption of a domestic household.

And we want to keep it that way. We are committed to continue working on the energy efficiency of our computational processes. On the one hand, optimizations so far have been limited to improving data compression after interpolation, making compression less aggressive. This saves both time when compressing and in subsequent operations that need to decompress the data. On the other hand, we want to continue working on optimizing the code at the algorithm level, initially orienting it for execution on CPUs and GPUs, in order to take advantage of the flexibility of resource use, with techniques such as Power Capping.

Nologin, together with the Galician Supercomputing Center (CESGA), is a provider of the Copernicus European Marine Service, making 5-day oceanographic forecasts of variables such as waves, sea level, circulation and biogeochemistry. These forecasts cover the entire Atlantic area between the Canary Islands and Ireland, as well as the Western Mediterranean. The daily performance of this type of simulations required more than 1000 computational cores and the capacity to process 1.5 Tb of Input/Output. Reducing both the time and the number of resources to do so is one of our objectives.

About NOW Systems

Nologin Ocean Weather Systems (NOW) is a provider of solutions and services for the marine environment, facilitating a more sustainable and profitable management of it. NOW develops scientific-technical solutions based on numerical modeling and artificial intelligence, and making use of the different existing observational products, allows to support operational ocean-atmospheric forecasting and climate monitoring services.

NOW's services also include visualization and value-added tools implemented to meet the specific needs of future customers anywhere in the world and at any scale (global, regional and coastal/local). Nologin is a provider of the Marine Copernicus, leading its IBI-MFC regional forecasting service and participating as a partner in the consortium responsible for its Insitu-TAC observational data service.
