Monitoring

From observations to information

KEY BENEFITS

  • Generating reliable information from observations.
  • Comprehensive collection of observations (> 100 data sources; different providers).
  • Advanced data management (> 14 years of experience).
  • Information quality (own quality control processes).
  • Delivering tailor-made monitoring services (combined use of in-situ and satellite data).
  • Creating synergies between observations, models and AI-based solutions.

Observational Data Product Management

Our team can collect and process a widespread variety of oceanographic data from marine environmental measurement networks around the world, including:

  • In-situ data from mooring buoys, drifters, profilers, tide gauges, HF radars, saildrones, etc.; as Copernicus Marine Provider, dealing with 6500 active stations (/50,000 historical ones) from more than 150 providers worldwide.
  • Satellite data for surface temperature, salinity, sea level anomaly, significant wave height, ocean color, and chlorophyll; using datasets from most recent missions (Sentinels -S3 and S6- ones or the new Chinese-French CFOSAT mission) and planning to include forthcoming ones (i.e. related to swath altimetry).

We collect observational data in near-real-time basis, applying to them quality controls to later generate homogeneous observational data products. Resulting products are used for:

  • Service purposes: NOW is a Copernicus Marine InSitu TAC.
  • Supporting NOW modelling activities (observations assimilated or used for model validation).
  • Dissemination through our end-user applications, and support to our taylor made warning systems.
