NOW at the XIII Congress of the Spanish Association of Climatology

Madrid, 22-24 January, 2025 – NOW will participate in the XIII Congress of the Spanish Association of Climatology (AEC), which will take place from January 22 to 24, 2025, in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Madrid. Under the theme "Climate Change and Society: From Basic Science to Climate Services," the event will bring together national and international experts to discuss scientific advances and strategies related to climate change, climate variability, and climate services.

Álvaro de Pascual Collar will co-chair the session "Mechanisms of Oceanic Climate Variability", where he will also present the paper "The Role of Copernicus Marine and IBI-MFC in Monitoring Climate and Environmental Variability". This work highlights the role of the Copernicus Marine service in observing and analyzing the state of the ocean through Ocean Monitoring Indicators (OMIs) and the annual Ocean State Report. In particular, it will address the contributions of the IBI-MFC, which include innovative indicators for the IBI region and the analysis of phenomena such as marine heatwaves. This presentation encapsulates over a decade of accumulated expertise, strengthening ocean knowledge to tackle current climate challenges.

Moreover, Jue Lin Ye will present a poster on "Delayed-mode products of sea level for the European and planetary network of tide-gauges". This Copernicus project aims to enhance sea level data quality control. Since 2021, it has employed the SELENE software to identify and correct errors in historical sea level data from 705 European and 117 non-European stations. This data will improve our understanding of long-term sea level trends and our capacity to predict sea levels. Future plans include incorporating vertical land movement corrections and expanding the projects geographical scope.
