27 September – The 7th issue of the Copernicus Ocean State Report was published. This report is a flagship publication of the EU Copernicus Marine Service, offering a comprehensive overview of the state, variability, and change of the global ocean for scientists, members of the blue economy, decision-makers, and the public.
In this edition, NOW Systems has led the publication of an OMI focused on monitoring the heat stored in the upper layers of the ocean up to a depth of 2000 meters in the Iberia-Biscay-Ireland (IBI) region. This work provides a study of the spatial and temporal variability of the ocean heat content in the northeastern Atlantic region, describing the key role that subsurface water masses play in the OHC trends in the IBI region.
The systematic monitoring of relevant oceanographic phenomena enables tracking the variability and trends of the ocean over the past decades. This generates highly useful information for anticipating impacts related to climate variability.
In this context, NOW Systems contributes to the development of Ocean Monitoring Indices (OMIs) that will subsequently be included in the list of operational OMIs of the Copernicus Marine Service.
