A new Copernicus Marine Operational Release (November 2023)

The Challenge

To continuously evolve monitoring and forecasting services with the more advanced state-of-the-art technology.

The Results

Underlining its commitment of continuous enhancement, the user-driven and policy-driven Copernicus Marine Service releases periodically new/enhanced products. NOW Systems contributes to these regular operational releases, improving the products delivered by the IBI MFC and the In Situ TAC respective service portfolios. In the framework of this last November 2023 Operational Release, the following milestones were achieved:

Regarding InSitu TAC upgrades:

  • The NRT Operational product, adaptation of file formats to include a new dimensionality characterization, following the Discrete Sampling Geometries scheme defined by the NetCDF Climate and Forecast convention. These renovated features, along with the enrichment of metadata settings, allow a better representation of the spatial and temporal data properties, easing product uses and enhancing the info discovery by users.

  • The Wave Multi-Year product is extended, including a new dataset that records hourly homogenized data and rounded timestamps for all platforms timeseries, resulting in a suitable tool for multi-source intercomparison and metrics assessment.

  • The Sea Level Multi Year product includes new datasets containing hourly values of both sea level (total water level) and astronomical tide and surge (non-tidal residuals) components. This decomposition of the sea level signal provided for the IBI region (as demonstrator) is useful for users interested in having a direct access to the different sea level processes (being especially important during extreme events, where meteorological component of the surge can be relevant in coastal zones).

Concerning IBI-MFC updates featured in November 2023 Release:

  • First operational delivery of new NRT physics, waves and biogeochemistry products for the North-West-Shelf region, derived from the IBI-MFC Northeast model applications. These new products encompass historic data for the last 2 years.

    >>> New NWS products derived from the IBI-MFC NE Atlantic model solution. New IBI-MFC Operational Capability for IBI & NWS Production.

  • A new IBI Multi Year wave product available. 30 years of new wave data released, improving substantially its resolution (now at 1/36º; and duplicating it with respect to previous -deprecated- version). New highest wave (max crest & crest-to-trough) variables are also included.

    >>> New IBI WAV reanalysis at 1/36º. GLORIA Med Storm (2020).

  • The NRT physics and wave products have been enhanced, with the use of upgraded upstream data in the physics system and the integration of a new modelling core allowing the assimilation of spectra observations in the case of waves.

The Client

The Copernicus Marine Service is a provider of free and open marine data and services to enable marine policy implementation, support Blue growth and scientific innovation.

Partners

In the IBI MFC, NOW Systems co-leads with MOI the service, being MF and CESGA also part of the partnership.

In the In Situ TAC, NOW Systems is part of the partnership, coordinated by Ifremer (France) and composed by Puertos del Estado, HCMR, IOBAS, IMR, SMHI, BSH.
