The Client
The Copernicus Marine Service, funded by the European Commission and implemented by Mercator Océan international, is a free and open marine data service that facilitates the application of marine regulations, supporting the blue growth and scientific innovation.
The Challenge
The NOW Forecasting Area will develop this operational service for the NWS area, in close collaboration with the IBI-MFC Copernicus Marine service.
To deliver operational products for predicting the state of the ocean for its physics, waves and biogeochemistry components, in the North Sea (North-West Shelf -NWS- zone), based on the solutions of the "North East Atlantic and Shelf Seas" operational models originally developed for the service provision in the IBI zone, developing procedures to evaluate the quality of NWS operational products and performing R&D activities for improvement of the physical model solution in the area (i.e., upgrade of the eastern model boundary condition in the Baltic area).
The Results
NOW Systems ensures operational provision of 6 NWS Products (3 Near Real Time forecasts and 3 multi-year reanalysis for physics, wave and biogeochemistry components).
Implemention of required processes needed to guarantee operational assessment of the NWS Product Quality
Evolution of the IBI-MFC NARVAL validation tool, and provision of NWS validation metrics for the Copernicus Product Quality dashboard
R&D Project to improve the "North East Atlantic and Shelf Seas" model solution used to generate NWS and IBI products. Performance of NEMO model sensitivity studies, testing changes in the eastern Baltic boundary condition to enhance seamless transition of Copernicus Marine model products (North Sea and Baltic exchanges) .
